How Does Glycol Cooling Work?

A glycol cooling system consists of four main components: a glycol chiller, a glycol pump, a glycol reservoir, and a heat exchanger. The glycol chiller cools the mixture of glycol and water to a desired temperature. The glycol pump is a device that circulates the glycol mixture through a closed loop of tubing or piping. The glycol reservoir is a tank that stores the glycol mixture and allows for expansion and contraction. The heat exchanger is the device that transfers heat from the process water or air to the glycol mixture.

The glycol cooling system works as follows:

  • The glycol chiller cools down the glycol mixture to a set point temperature, usually between -10°C and 10°C.
  • The glycol pump pushes the glycol mixture through the closed loop system at a constant flow rate and pressure.
  • The glycol mixture flows through the heat exchanger, where it absorbs heat from the process water or air that needs to be cooled.
  • The glycol mixture returns to the glycol reservoir, where it releases some of the heat to the ambient air.
  • The glycol mixture is then recirculated back to the glycol chiller, where the cycle repeats.
